Baked Meat and Potato Casserole with Tomato Sauce

For the meat layer
700–800 g minced meat (beef or beef–pork mix)
1 onion, finely chopped
2–3 cloves garlic, minced
1 egg
3–4 tbsp breadcrumbs
1 tsp paprika
1 tsp black pepper
1 tsp salt
1 tsp oregano or thyme
1 tbsp oil
For the sauce
2–3 tomatoes chopped or 200 ml tomato sauce
1 small onion, chopped
1 tbsp tomato paste (optional)
Salt, pepper
A little oil
For the topping
200–250 g grated cheese (mozzarella + cheddar or any melting cheese)
Fresh dill, chopped
Optional: 2–3 tbsp sour cream or mayonnaise (for extra creaminess)
Preparation
1. Make the meat base
In a bowl, mix minced meat with onion, garlic, egg, breadcrumbs, salt, pepper, paprika, oregano.
Spread the meat mixture evenly into a baking dish, pressing it like a “meat crust.”
Bake 15 minutes at 180°C to firm it up slightly.
2. Prepare the tomato layer
Sauté onion in a little oil.
Add tomatoes or tomato sauce, tomato paste, salt & pepper.
Cook 5–7 minutes until it thickens.
3. Assemble
Pour the tomato sauce evenly over the pre-baked meat layer.
Add a thin layer of sour cream or mayo (optional).
Sprinkle generously with grated cheese.
Add chopped dill on top.
4. Bake
Bake again for 25–30 minutes at 180°C until the cheese is golden, bubbly, and melted.
